Garfield's Jashaun Agosto Commits to LIU-Brooklyn
Jashaun Agosto of Garfield High School (Seattle, WA) has committed to LIU-Brooklyn.
By Jordan Divens
LIU-Brooklyn picked up a late commitment in the class of 2016: two-time state champion Jashaun Agosto. He is a 5-11 point guard planning on attending prep school next season. Before deciding to commit to the Blackbirds, he said, "The coaches were genuine and seemed very honest. They really showed me they want me to play their next season, and I think they will help me get to the next level and that's very important to me."
Agosto jumped on his first Division I offer, as he was drawn to the big city and the opportunity to grow as a player. "It was in the heart of the city and you can't get any better than going to New York, everything happens there, all the big things happen," Agosto said. "Being there, I have an opportunity to do great things and I will do what I am supposed to do to be the best player I can."
Although LIU-Brooklyn was the first to extend an offer, Agosto said he was in no rush to commit to college, as he has always planned to attend prep school. "I wasn't rushing anything--if I didn't like the opportunity and they didn't seem genuine, then I would have went to prep school, and I wouldn't have went to college this year," Agosto said. "I felt this was the best fit, being able to play in Brooklyn. In this environment, they seemed honest, and it is just up to me now."
Agosto was a key contributor to a successful Garfield team that won two state titles. He saw a number of his teammates go to Division I schools over the last couple years. When asked about being overlooked in the recruiting process, Agosto said, "It makes me real hungry, being the most winning high school player coming out of Washington and putting my team in the position to win multiple titles. I knew God had a plan for me, though, and I just kept working. It was a little later than I expected, but I knew God had a plan for me and I just tried to stay the course and keep working hard to get where I want to be, which is the NBA.
"I have a lot of family down in New York--my dad is from Brooklyn; he grew up in the projects--and I felt it was just meant to be. I want to thank God for the opportunity he has given me, and the success and I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me get to where I am today."
