Michael Porter Jr. was all alone, the ball in his hands, the state championship all but finalized. Leave it to the best player in the country to do something special. Leave it to the top team in the country to end it on such an exciting note.

Just over 40 seconds remained in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 3A title game Saturday night when Porter caught the ball just beyond the arc. All it took was one dribble to blow the roof off the building in Tacoma.

The 6-foot-9 small forward, and No. 1 prospect in 2017, took the dribble, tossed it off the glass, and then threw it down with authority to give No. 1 Nathan Hale (WA) the 68-51 victory over rival Garfield.

Pandemonium ensued.

Porter, who was tabbed Most Valuable Player, finished with 27 points and 17 rebounds, while teammates P.J. Fuller added 12 and Jontay Porter posted 10. Despite trailing at halftime, it was the fourth time Nathan Hale defeated Garfield this season.

From 3-18 last season to undefeated 29-0 state champions, the top-ranked Raiders and first-year head coach Brandon Roy celebrated on the court in style.

Is Dick's Nationals next for Nathan Hale? That is the hot-button question, but, for now, this was as sweet as it gets.
