The Roster & The Missing For USA Men's U19 World Cup Training Camp
The 2017 USA Men's U19 World Cup Training Camp roster is official. A third consecutive gold medal is on the line. The squad just may not include the names many would perhaps expect.

That's not to say the 12-player team traveling to Cairo, Egypt, from July 1-9 won't be loaded. Of the 28 invited to training camp on June 18-25 in Colorado Springs, CO, there's seven USA Basketball gold medalists, including four players who helped USA Basketball qualify for the World Cup.

"We're excited about the players who have accepted our invitation to attend the USA Men's U19 training camp," Purdue head coach and selection committee chairman Matt Painter said in a statement. "We have an outstanding group of players, some of whom have prior USA Basketball experience, some with outstanding collegiate experience and some of the best high school players in America. It will be very competitive in tryouts to make the 12-person U19 team."

THE INVITEES:

Desmond Bane (TCU)
Bol Bol (2018 Flo40 No. 17)

Marques Bolden (Duke)
Chaundee Brown (2017 Flo40 No. 39, Wake Forest)
Devon Daniels (NC State)
Hamidou Diallo (Kentucky)
Carson Edwards (Purdue)
Malachi Flynn (Washington State)
Kevin Hurter (Maryland)
Louis King (Class of 2018)
Kevin Knox (2017 Flo40 No. 6, Kentucky)

Romeo Langford (2018 Flo40 No. 3)

Brandon McCoy (2017 Flo40 No. 8, UNLV)
De'Anthony Melton (USC)
Chuma Okeke (Auburn)
Josh Okogie (Georgia Tech)
Shamorie Ponds (St. John's)
Payton Pritchard (Oregon)
Immanuel Quickley (2018 Flo40 No. 11)
Cameron Reddish (2018 Flo40 No. 4)

Mitchell Robinson (2017 Flo40 No. 7, Western Kentucky)
Quinton Rose (Temple)
Jeremiah Timon (2017 Flo40 No. 27, Missouri)
PJ Washington (2017 Flo40 No. 13, Kentucky)

Austin Wiley (Auburn)
Kris Wilkes (2017 Flo40 No. 21, UCLA)
Trae Young (2017 Flo40 No. 12, Oklahoma)

It's a solid mix of college and prep talent, but it just is missing a couple of key names.

THE MISSING:

Given the circumstances of some of the nation's top incoming college freshmen recently arriving to their respective schools, it is understandable why a lot of last summer's USA Basketball team are not attending the training camp, even if they all were born after the January 1, 1998, deadline. Players such as 2017 Flo40 No. 1 Michael Porter Jr. (Missouri), Trevon Duval (No. 3, Duke), Collin Sexton (No. 9, Alabama), and Troy Brown (No. 11, Oregon), among many others, are not on the list.

However, 2018 Flo40 No. 1 Marvin Bagley III and No. 2 Zion Williamson, who can both dominate at this level, are nowhere to be found. There are likely good reasons for the absences, but there's no way to look at that list, the potential, and wonder what could have been if they had been a part of it.

THE COACHES:

Head Coach: John Calipari (Kentucky)
Assistant Coach: Tad Boyle (Colorado)
Assistant Coach: Danny Manning (Wake Forest)

This is a very strong staff that will absolutely bring the most out of its players. And for Calipari and Manning, there's a possibility they will coach some of their incoming freshmen on the team, if they make the roster. Hamidou Diallo, Kevin Knox, and PJ Washington will attend Kentucky next season, while Chaundee Brown will play at Wake Forest.

Additionally, it would give this staff a chance to coach potential signees such as Romeo Langford and Cameron Reddish.

THE SKINNY:

Talent? Absolutely. There is no reason any combination of this group cannot bring home the gold medal. Ultimately, that is the expectation and should be the outcome. This team will likely be very athletic with strong floor generals, scoring wings, and rim protectors from top to bottom.

The invitation process is not a perfect science, and this team will be a joy to watch. But knowing this could have been an even more ridiculous super team would have added a few more notches to the excitement scale.

Still, these tryouts are about to be intense.
