Nathan Hale's Brandon Roy: Happiest Man On The Planet

HILLSBORO, Ore. — It had been a little bit since Brandon Roy was part of a big game -- a few years, actually. There were some nerves, of course, but the former NBA All-Star turned Nathan Hale head coach found the groove again as soon as he stepped foot in the gym Friday night.

It was hard for anyone here not to get excited. Liberty High School was packed. The hype surrounding the Les Schwab Invitational championship game was inescapable. All that remained was finding out who would win the top 10 showdown of No. 8 Nathan Hale (WA) and No. 2 Sierra Canyon (CA), and which No. 1 player — Michael Porter Jr. (2017) or Marvin Bagley III (2018) — would reign king of the court in front of a standing-room-only crowd.

Turns out, the game itself far exceeded the buzz. It was arguably the greatest LSI championship game ever.

Nathan Hale erased a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to stun Sierra Canyon, 67-65.

Porter led the Raiders with 27 points and 15 rebounds, while Bagley dropped 22 points and 10 rebounds.

The first time was the charm for Roy. He is now in elite company as a big-time coach leading one of the best teams in high school basketball this season.
