LOS ANGELES, Calif. (July 12, 2016) --Jayson Tatum and Sydney McLaughlin were named the 2015-16 Gatorade Male and Female Athletes of the Year at a ceremony on Tuesday night at the L.A. Hotel.

Tatum (Chaminade Prep) ranked No. 3 overall in the ESPN 100 of prep basketball players, averaged 29.5 points and 9.1 rebounds a game. The forward, who hails from Missouri and recently began summer school at Duke, joins a highly-touted recruiting class for Coach K and the Blue Devils.

"Wow! What can I say… My parents and my grandmother always reminded me growing up to keep God first", said Tatum at the ceremony. I want to thank my parents, I owe them the world. I want to thank Gatorade for such a great honor and I want to thank my high school teammates, my teammates at Duke and Coach K!"

Sydney McLaughlin is the youngest Olympian since 1972 at the age of sixteen-years-old. She finished third in the 400m hurdles at the U.S. Olympic Trials last week. In addition to qualifying for the Olympics, McLaughlin holds the national high school record in the event, both indoors and outdoors.
