Landmark Conference At The Palestra: What To Know, How To Watch

After the roaring success of the Landmark Conference’s day inside one of the most iconic venues in college basketball a season ago, the league is returning to The Palestra in Philadelphia later this month.

This time, FloHoops will be bringing the action to you, live from “The Cathedral of College Basketball.”

With four league matchups (two women’s games and two men’s games) set for the Landmark Conference’s Jan. 14 return to the historic arena, the excitement is building. The conference is getting ready for its own time to shine on a court where many amazing moments have taken place.

Here’s a look at what to know and how to watch the Landmark Conference’s 2024 visit to The Palestra.

The four-game extravaganza will showcase some of the best on the hardwood NCAA Division III has to offer:

What Is The Palestra?

The Palestra is a bucket-list spot for many college basketball junkies, and for good reason.

Opened in Philadelphia in 1927, it is the oldest continuously used major-college arena in the country and is located on the University of Pennsylvania campus, normally being home to the Quakers men’s and women’s hoops teams.

But the venue, which with its close-quarters seating often feels and sounds much louder than its 8,700 capacity, is known best for its history with the iconic Philadelphia Big 5 – Villanova, Saint Joseph’s, Temple, Penn and La Salle – plus fellow Philly school Drexel.

Across the decades, there have been many, many classic rivalry showdowns between the city’s esteemed college basketball schools, with at least one men’s program from the Big 5 making every NCAA Tournament held from 1977-2022.

The venue has hosted more games since its opening than any other venue in college basketball, and in a sport full of iconic and impressionable atmospheres, few (if any) can beat a full Palestra watching two highly touted squads going toe to toe.

What Is The Landmark Conference Doing At The Palestra?

The Landmark Conference, a Division III league with schools based in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C., played a series of basketball games at The Palestra for the first time last season.

The conference held two men’s games and two women’s matchups – on the same court legendary players such as Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson once played during their college careers as part of visiting teams.

Expanding off the success of the 2023 event, the Landmark has put the 2024 edition, and all of its requisite information on the top of the homepage of its website, as it readies for its return to the venue Jan. 14 with another four games.

“Playing a full slate of Landmark Conference games at The Palestra is a unique and cherished opportunity for our student-athletes, coaches, and staff,” Landmark Commissioner Katie Boldvich is quoted as saying in a league’s news release. “This iconic venue isn’t just a place to play; it's a place where we honor the tradition of college basketball and create our own memorable moments in the Landmark Conference’s history.”

What Landmark Games Will Be Played At The Palestra?

All four games the Landmark is scheduled to play at The Palestra will take place Jan. 14, with the women kicking things off.

The women will play at noon and 2:30 p.m. Eastern, and the men’s game will be at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Elizabethtown (8-4 overall, 4-1 Landmark as of Thursday afternoon) is slated to get things going against Goucher (1-11, 1-4) at noon (ET).

The unbeaten Catholic women (12-0, 5-0) will attempt to remain unbeaten, taking on Juniata (1-11, 0-5) at 2:30 p.m.

In the men’s action, Drew (11-0, 4-0) will face Susquehanna (7-4, 4-0) at 5 p.m., and Moravian (5-7, 1-4) and Scranton (3-9, 1-4) will cap off the night at 7:30 p.m.

All four games will be streamed live, and exclusively, on FloHoops.

Games/Teams To Watch

If you want high-flying action, circle the Drew men’s game as one follow.

The Rangers are off to their best start and streak at any point in their program’s history at 11-0 and possess one of the highest-scoring offenses in Division III basketball.

Drew is led by second-year coach Michael McSloy, and the roster includes a host of lethal 3-point shooters and chaotic defensive pressure.

Picked to finish sixth in the league in the preseason, Drew instead is off to an unblemished start in Landmark play and could meet the River Hawks in a potential tussle for first place in the standings, dependent on how games go between this writing and the league’s day at The Palestra.

As for the pair of women’s games on the schedule, Catholic – ranked No. 13 by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and No. 15 by D3hoops.com in their separate national polls – could enter the Palestra with a 14-0 record. That would equal the Cardinals’ best start to a season in over a decade, though they’d first need to get through league foe and stout No. 3/5 Scranton (11-1, 4-1) on Jan. 12, which also will be broadcast live on FloHoops.

Regardless, Catholic is worth the watch for the way it can catch fire from long range alone, leading the Landmark and being in the top 10 nationally in Division III this season (as of Thursday afternoon) with a 36.1% clip from beyond the 3-point line.
