TCU Baseball Defeats USC In 11 Innings At Kubota College Baseball Series

TCU freshman Sam Myers had an unforgettable game Friday and got to be the hero for the Horned Frogs, who defeated USC in 11 innings to kick off the 2024 Kubota College Baseball Series Weekend 3.

Myers delivered a one-out base hit to right field to score Chase Brunson from second base, giving No. 3 TCU a 9-8 victory and its 10th consecutive win in 2024.

Brunson was hit by a pitch to start the inning at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Ryder Robinson.

Myers was 3 for 5 in the game with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Brunson and Robinson also contributed three hits apiece to help the Horned Frogs remain perfect on the season.

TCU had 13 hits in the win, while leaving 14 runners on base.

Six pitchers took the mound for TCU in the extended outing, with junior right-hander Kyle Ayers taking the win. He pitched two innings for the Horned Frogs, surrendering two hits, while striking out five, to pick up his first win in 2024.

The contest was a back-and-forth battle throughout, with TCU leading 6-5 heading into the top of the ninth inning.

Control issues from the TCU pitchers saw the game take a turn, as three walks, two hit batters, a wild pitch and an infield single allowed the Trojans to score three runs and take an 8-6 lead.

TCU was able to take advantage of some USC miscues with clutch hitting, and the Horned Frogs tied the game, before USC pitcher Josh Blum entered the game and ended the threat with three consecutive strikeouts.

Blum had five strikeouts in two innings for the Trojans, but he was replaced on the mound by Michael Ryhlick, who pitched 1/3 of an inning and took the loss.

USC had eights hits in the game and stranded 13 runners of its own. To try and slow the TCU offense, USC sent seven pitchers to the mound.

The Horned Frogs, who are coming off a successful homestand that included their first 9-0 start since 1994, are seeing their first “away” games this weekend just a few miles from their Fort Worth home.

Among their 10 wins this year, TCU has won five by one run.

TCU and USC are being joined at Globe Life Field, home of the World Series-winning Texas Rangers, by Arizona State and Texas A&M for six games over three days.

For USC, the 2024 campaign hasn’t been as fruitful.

The Trojans’ home field is undergoing renovations, so their home games in 2024 are split across three stadiums in South California.

The good news is, they recently picked up a pair of wins at OC Great Park in Irvina, California. The bad news is that USC opened the season with five consecutive losses and a rainout, before winning back-to-back games against Portland.

The Trojans, 12-time baseball national champions, now are 2-6 on the year and coming off a loss to Michigan this week.

USC and TCU both will return to action at Globe Life Field two more times over the weekend, including a rematch to close the event Sunday evening (4 p.m. Eastern).

In Saturday’s action, USC will take on Texas A&M at 3 p.m. Eastern, and TCU will face Arizona State at 7 p.m.

This weekend’s Kubota College Baseball Series action is the final piece of two exciting weeks of college baseball at Globe Life Field.

The festivities helped kick off the 2024 season, starting with the Shriners Children’s College Showdown from Feb. 16-18. That was followed by the multi-part Kubota College Baseball Series, which has included Mid-Week Games (Feb. 20-21), Weekend 2 (Feb. 23-25) and now Weekend 3 (March 1-3).

Follow the action live, as FloBaseball provides news and notes from each game at the 2024 Kubota College Baseball Series Weekend 3.
