Texas A&M Shuts Out Arizona State At 2024 Kubota College Baseball Series

One swing of the bat from junior Braden Montgomery in the bottom of the first inning was all No. 7 Texas A&M needed to get past Arizona State on the first night of the 2024 Kubota College Baseball Series Weekend 3 in Arlington, Texas.

Montgomery, who transferred from Stanford, blew open the game with no-out three-run home run to left center. The blast also scored Gavin Grahovac and Jace LaViolette, who both walked to start the inning.

Freshman Caden Sorrell added a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the third inning to put Texas A&M ahead 4-0. It was the first home run of his collegiate career.

The win was the first for the Aggies on the road this year, and they improve to 9-0 for the 2024 season.

In all, Texas A&M had just four hits – by four players, but it was enough. The Aggies also left nine runners on base.

The Texas A&M pitchers did the rest of the work, combining to hold the Sun Devils to just two hits.

Sophomore left-hander Ryan Prager started the contest and went five innings, giving up one hit, while walking two and striking out eight. He’s now gone 16+ innings this year without giving up a run, and he’s 3-0 on the season.

Senior southpaw Evan Aschenbeck handled the second half of the game for the Aggies and finished with a 12-out save. He surrendered one hit and struck out four.

Freshman infielder Ethan Mendoza had both hits for Arizona State – a one-out double in the fifth inning and a single in the eighth.

Outside of the two home runs, the Arizona State pitching performance was solid, too.

Thomas Burns got the loss and falls to 1-1 for the year. He went four innings, giving up three hits and four runs, while walking six and striking out six.

Ryan Schiefer held the Aggies hitless for three innings, and Sean Fitzpatrick handled the final inning, giving up one hit.

So far this season, the Aggies are outscoring their opponents 97-10, with the streak featuring a 21-2 seven-inning win over Wagner last week. Texas A&M entered this weekend’s event third in the country in slugging percentage (.678) and on-base percentage (.500), fourth in batting average (.372) and ninth in scoring (11.6).

Arizona State’s 2024 season has been mediocre, and the Sun Devils arrived in Arlington with a 5-3 mark, which includes a 10-8 win over Ohio State on Feb. 25. They beat the Buckeyes twice in their three-game series.

The Sun Devils, now 5-4, have 10 or more hits in seven of their nine games this season, but that obviously hasn’t translated to victories.

The 2024 Kubota College Baseball Series Weekend 3 marks the first road trip of the season for Arizona State and the first time since 2007 the Sun Devils have left their home state during the first month of a season.

Friday’s Texas A&M-Arizona State matchup was the second meeting in history between the two schools, which played for the first time in 2007. The Sun Devils won that one, 5-4.

Both squads will return to action at Globe Life Field two more times over the weekend, including a rematch Sunday afternoon at noon Eastern.

In Saturday’s action, Texas A&M will face USC at 3 p.m. Eastern, and Arizona State will meet TCU at 7 p.m. EST.

This weekend’s Kubota College Baseball Series action is the final piece of two exciting weeks of college baseball at Globe Life Field.

The festivities helped kick off the 2024 season, starting with the Shriners Children’s College Showdown from Feb. 16-18. That was followed by the multi-part Kubota College Baseball Series, which has included Mid-Week Games (Feb. 20-21), Weekend 2 (Feb. 23-25) and now Weekend 3 (March 1-3).

Texas A&M is coming off a 38-27 season that ended with back-to-back losses to Stanford at the 2023 NCAA Stanford Regional.

In 2023, Arizona State was 32-23, and the season ended with a 1-1 record in pool play at the Pac-12 baseball tournament.
