Garzon Earns Birthday Double-Double For IU Against Columbia In The Bahamas
Yarden Garzon and Lilly Meister put up a combined 38 pts and 18 rebounds in a close one against Columbia on Saturday, Nov. 23 in the 2024 Battle 4 Atlantis.
In what was a close contest between a Columbia team trying to add another big win to their record and an Indiana team that was looking to build off of their recent win over No. 24 Stanford, the Hoosiers were able to pull out a dub in a close contest on Saturday afternoon in game two of the Battle 4 Atlantis Women's bracket.
The Paradise Island, Bahamas-based tournament hosts eight teams including No. 18 Baylor, Indiana, and Texas A&M.

Entering today's contest, Columbia was 4-1, owing their lone loss to fellow Battle 4 Atlantis team Villanova, 67-68. Villanova plays Texas A&M at 9:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 23. Columbia sat near the top of the Ivy League conference, behind just Harvard who found themselves off to a blistering 6-1 start to the 2024 season.
Indiana was 2-2, the second worst in the Big Ten, heading into this match-up against the Ivy League runner-up. They fell earlier this season to the Ivy League leader, Harvard, in their second game of the season, when the Hoosiers were ranked No. 25. The loss to the Crimson contributed to Indiana losing their ranking shortly after.
Their most recent game before playing against the Lions was against No. 24 Stanford—a small redemption as they aim to make another run at least as far as their NCAA Women's Championship Sweet Sixteen trip earlier this year in March.
Game Recap: Indiana Escapes Columbia In Close Battle 4 Atlantis Showdown, 72-62
Indiana used a late-game surge to defeat Columbia in the second game of the Battle 4 Atlantis Women's Tournament on Saturday.
In the opening minutes, both teams struggled with turnovers, as Columbia committed four and Indiana six in the first 10 minutes of play. The Lions led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter, but the game quickly shifted in favor of the Hoosiers.
Indiana closed out the first half with a 7-0 run over the final minutes of the second quarter, taking a 27-24 lead into the break. Guard Yarden Garzon led the Hoosiers at the half with 10 points and five rebounds. Riley Weiss paced Columbia with 10 points and two rebounds.
Indiana began to assert itself early in the third quarter, with Lilly Meister playing a key role in a dominant stretch. Meister forced an offensive turnover, grabbed both an offensive and defensive rebound, and scored two quick layups within a 90-second span. Columbia called a timeout to regroup.
The timeout seemed to help, as the Lions answered with a run of their own to close the gap. Columbia finished the third quarter strong, making their last four field goal attempts and cutting Indiana’s lead to 46-43 with 90 seconds left in the period. The Lions had all the momentum heading into the final quarter.
As the game entered its last 90 seconds, Indiana sealed the win with an 8-2 run, pushing their lead back to a comfortable margin. The Hoosiers move on to the winner's side in the tournament, and will face Baylor on Sunday, Nov. 24.
Meister had a standout performance for Indiana, finishing with a career-high 20 points on 10-of-15 shooting, along with eight rebounds. Garzon added a double-double, contributing 18 points, 10 rebounds, and three three-pointers to lead the Hoosiers' offense.
For Columbia, Weiss and Collins each scored 17 points to lead the Lions. Henderson added 13 points and six rebounds in the loss.
Garzon recorded her first double-double of the season in the fourth quarter, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds. With about four minutes left in the game, Columbia briefly took the lead, but Indiana quickly regained control.
