In a feat that cements its place among the greatest runs in college basketball history, the NYU women’s basketball team set a new NCAA Division III record by winning 82 consecutive games, eclipsing the previous benchmark and standing alone atop the sport’s record book.

The Violets claimed the historic victory on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026, with a 69-58 win over Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

For years, the NCAA Division III record for consecutive victories belonged to NYU's fellow UAA counterpart, Washington University in St. Louis, which rolled off 81 straight wins from 1998-2001. NYU’s latest win not only broke that mark outright but also placed the team among the longest winning streaks in all of NCAA women’s basketball history, ranking just behind Division I powerhouses like UConn, whose historic runs reached 90 and 111 games.

This historic streak didn’t happen overnight — it was years in the making. The Violets entered the 2025-26 season already riding a wave of success, having finished the two previous campaigns 31-0 and winning back-to-back NCAA Division III National Championship titles.

Heading into the 2025-26 season, NYU was already near the record and remained focused on continuing its winning ways. Through January and early February, the Violets overcame a variety of opponents with poise and precision. Their 80th win came in a nail-biter — a 58-57 thriller against Carnegie Mellon on Feb. 1 — which set the stage for the historic weekend ahead.

A win against Case Western Reserve on Feb. 6, 2026, saw NYU tie the all-time Division III mark at 81 games. With a 73-65 victory, guard Olivia Lagao led the way with 17 points, and standout defenders like Yasmene Clark controlled the boards, setting up a championship-caliber Sunday.

Super Sunday Glory

The spotlight was brightest on Super Sunday, where the Violets seized sole ownership of the record. Senior guard Caroline Peper, the only player on the roster to have ever experienced a collegiate loss, set the tone early, sinking three consecutive three-pointers as NYU overcame early resistance from Carnegie Mellon. Teammate Brooke Batchelor provided key scoring and rebounding presence, and sophomore Zahra Alexander contributed important buckets down the stretch.

Coach Meg Barber, a former NYU player who returned to lead her alma mater, emphasized that the accomplishment was gratifying not just for the accolades but for what it meant to the program and its culture. “I’m happy that talk of the streak will subside a bit now that NYU is on top,” Barber said, noting that the team’s focus will now shift back to its season objectives: clinching another UAA Conference title and making a deep NCAA Tournament run.
