Opening night is almost here, and CAA Basketball has plenty of storylines worth following.

From defending champions facing new challenges to programs welcoming new head coaches, the 2026-27 season has the potential to bring plenty of surprises.

On the men's side, UNCW enters as the preseason favorite while Hofstra looks to defend its conference championship. In Women's Basketball, Monmouth has earned the top spot in the preseason poll, but defending champion Charleston is beginning a new era.

Before the first games get underway, here are five CAA basketball storylines to know.

1. Can UNCW Turn Preseason Expectations Into A Championship?

UNC Wilmington Men's Basketball enters the men's basketball season as the clear preseason favorite.

The Seahawks earned 11 first-place votes in the coaches' poll after finishing last season 27-7 overall and 15-3 in conference play.

But despite finishing atop the regular-season standings, UNCW watched Hofstra claim the CAA Tournament title.

With Preseason Player of the Year Patrick Wessler and first-team selection CJ Luster II leading the way, the Seahawks have an opportunity to turn another strong season into a championship.

2. Hofstra Is Looking For Back-To-Back Titles

The Pride enters the season as the defending CAA men's basketball champions after defeating Monmouth 75-69 in the 2026 title game.

Now, Hofstra Men's Basketball faces the challenge of defending its crown against a conference filled with contenders.

With Justin Moore and Deywilk Tavarez joining the roster, the Pride has added experienced talent to help pursue another championship.

The question is whether Hofstra can make another run through the conference tournament.

3. Monmouth Enters With A Target On Its Back

The CAA women's basketball preseason poll left little doubt about which team enters with the highest expectations.

Monmouth Women's Basketball earned all 12 available first-place votes, making the Hawks the unanimous preseason favorite.

With Gigi Gamble and Divine Dibula both returning as preseason first-team selections, Monmouth has a strong foundation.

But being the preseason favorite also means every opponent will have the Hawks circled on its schedule.

4. New Coaches Bring New Opportunities

Several CAA basketball programs enter the season under new leadership.

On the men's side, John Groce takes over Charleston Men's Basketball, while Jimmie Williams begins his tenure at Campbell Men's Basketball.

In women's basketball, defending champion Charleston Women's Basketball welcomes Amanda Butler, while Ali Jacques takes over Campbell Women's Basketball.

Each coach inherits a different challenge, but all four will have an opportunity to establish a new direction as conference competition approaches.

5. Can The Defending Women's Champion Surprise Again?

Charleston enters the season in an unusual position: defending CAA champion, but picked eighth in the preseason poll.

With Amanda Butler taking over as head coach, the Cougars will have to navigate a coaching transition while competing against several teams expected to finish ahead of them.

Senior guard Tyja Beans earned preseason second-team recognition and will be among the players to watch.

The Cougars have already shown they can win the conference tournament. Now they'll have to prove they can remain in contention under new leadership.
