The Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball race has a clear starting point, but no shortage of challengers.
Mount Union Men's Basketball finished atop the regular-season standings in 2025-26, Otterbein followed close behind, and Ohio Northern also put together a strong conference campaign.

When the postseason arrived, however, Heidelberg Men's Basketball made the biggest statement, defeating Otterbein to capture the OAC Tournament championship and earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.
With the 2026-27 season approaching, the conference offers several compelling storylines.
Here are five things to know about OAC men's basketball.
1. Mount Union Enters As A Regular-Season Benchmark
Mount Union set the pace in conference play last season, finishing 14-2 in the OAC and claiming the regular-season title.
The Purple Raiders averaged 81.6 points per game in conference action, the second-highest mark in the league, while posting a plus-10.5 scoring margin.
Junior forward Elijah Farrington was a major part of that success. He earned the conference's Dick Reynolds Player of the Year award after averaging 15.83 points and 8.29 rebounds per game during the regular season.
Mount Union will be one of the teams to watch as it looks to turn regular-season dominance into another deep postseason run.
2. Heidelberg Is The Defending Tournament Champion
Heidelberg proved that the regular-season standings do not tell the whole story.
The Student Princes defeated Otterbein 82-75 in the 2026 OAC Tournament championship game to win their first conference tournament title since 2008 and secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Marcos Vazquez earned tournament MVP honors, while Jarveil Gainey led Heidelberg with 21 points and nine rebounds in the final. The Student Princes also controlled the paint, outscoring Otterbein 46-30 inside.
Heidelberg's championship run makes it a central storyline entering 2026-27.
The challenge now is to build on that postseason breakthrough and remain in contention throughout the conference schedule.
3. Otterbein Has Unfinished Business
Otterbein finished second in the regular-season standings with a 13-3 conference record before reaching the OAC Tournament championship game.
Although the Cardinals fell to Heidelberg in the final, their season established them as one of the league's strongest programs.
The Cardinals paired an efficient offense with a strong defense in 2025-26. They allowed 68.3 points per game in conference play, the second-lowest average in the OAC, and finished with a plus-7.4 scoring margin.
Otterbein also returns to the schedule with a key matchup against Mount Union on Dec. 5. The game offers an early opportunity to measure two teams that finished near the top of the standings last season.
4. Ohio Northern Is Another Team To Watch
Ohio Northern finished 12-4 in conference play, good for third place in the regular-season standings, and earned the No. 3 seed in the OAC Tournament.
The Polar Bears' season was particularly notable because Jon Tropf earned conference co-Coach of the Year honors in his first season as head coach.
The Polar Bears also had one of the conference's most reliable defenses, allowing 68.8 points per game in OAC play. That mark ranked second in the league, behind Otterbein.
Ohio Northern will have opportunities to make an early statement in January, when it faces Heidelberg on Jan. 6 and Otterbein on Jan. 13. Those games could help shape the race for postseason positioning.
5. The Conference Race Should Be Competitive From Top To Bottom
The OAC features nine men's basketball programs:
- Baldwin Wallace
- Capital
- Heidelberg
- Marietta
- Mount Union
- Muskingum
- Ohio Northern
- Otterbein
- Wilmington
Last season's results showed how varied the league can be, with Mount Union leading the regular-season standings while Heidelberg made its run through the tournament.
Offensive styles also differ across the conference. Wilmington College led OAC teams with 83.6 points per game in league play, while Mount Union averaged 81.6. Otterbein and Ohio Northern, meanwhile, were among the conference's strongest defensive teams.
The 2026-27 conference schedule begins in earnest in December, with Mount Union visiting Baldwin Wallace on Dec. 2 and Otterbein hosting Mount Union on Dec. 5.
The OAC Tournament is scheduled for Feb. 23, 25 and 27, setting up another late-season push for the conference title and an NCAA tournament berth.
Mount Union, Otterbein and Ohio Northern have reasons to believe they can contend, while Heidelberg will look to prove its tournament championship was the start of something bigger.
As the new season approaches, the biggest question is whether the regular-season favorite can finish the job or another team will rise when the stakes are highest.
