From William & Mary, one of the most improved CAA players is Cassidy Geddes, who earned preseason honorable mention in 2024 and earns first-team all-conference two years later.
On the men's side, UNCW leads preseason rankings after winning the 2027 regular season. But Hofstra returns trying to earn their second consecutive tournament title. UNCW returns preseason player of the year Patrick Wessler. Entering his first season as a Cougar, Eli Ellis joins Charleston after winning the 2026 conference title. Justin Moore is another newcomer ready to make waves, starting his journey with Hofstra.
Here are the top teams and players to keep an eye on in the 2026/27 season.
CAA Women's Basketball
Monmouth Women's Basketball
The Hawk women are the CAA 2026/27 preseason No. 1 seed. They soared to the top after finishing 4th in the CAA regular season with a 12-6 conference record.
Their 6 conference losses were to none of the teams that finished ahead of them. Monmouth defeated regular-season champion Charleston 69-57 in mid-February. They went 1-1 with Drexel, taking a loss in January and then slaying the Dragons in double overtime a week later. Campbell, who finished third in the regular season, took a loss to Monmouth after putting up over double the Camels' points.
A loss to Stony Brook ended their run in the 2026 CAA Tournament in the quarterfinals.
A bid to the WNIT tournament secured them a post-season opportunity, where they beat Lehigh in the first round and lost to Cleveland State in the second.
It is their first time at the top of the preseason poll since joining the CAA in 2022. In their first year of the CAA, Monmouth won the 2023 CAA tournament over Towson. The 2025/26 season was their first 20-win season in 15 years, and they plan on continuing their momentum into the 2026/27 season.
Drexel Women's Basketball
Drexel is the school with the most amount of CAA titles with 3 championships won in 2024, 2021, and 2009.
In 2025, they finished second in the regular season, only behind Charleston, with a conference record of 13-5. They entered the CAA tournament as the third seed and defeated #6 Elon in the quarterfinals before losing to Hofstra in the semifinals.
They enter the 2026/27 season with the #3 seed in the preseason poll.
Gigi Gamble - Monmouth
Monmouth's Gigi Gamble was chosen as the CAA Preseason Player of the Year. This will mark Gamble's second year as a Hawk after joining ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Before Monmouth, Gamble played at CCBC Essex and Kean University. She earned multiple accolades at her previous schools, including All-NJAC First Team and NJAC Rookie of the Year.
In her first season as a Hawk, she led the team in scoring with 15.2 points per game and had 21 games with over 10 points, nine games with 20+ points, and three games with 30+ points. She ranks the second-highest single-game output in Monmouth history after a 41-point game versus Towson.
Divine Dibula - Monmouth
The Canadian-born star returns for her fourth year as a Hawk; Divine Dibula joins Gamble as one of the top returners in the CAA.
In the 2025/26 season, she averaged 13.9 points and 6/.9 rebounds per game over 33 matches. She put up 25 games worth of double digits. She put up the most rebounds for the Hawks with 227. Her career high comes from their second game of the WNIT against Cleveland State, where she earned 26 points and 11 rebounds.
Cassidy Geddes - William & Mary
Cassidy Gebbes enters her senior year with William & Mary to earn her first Preseason First Team All-CAA honors. Ahead of the 2024/25 season, she earned Preseason CAA Honorable Mention.
In the 2025/26 season, Geddes started in all 31 games, where she led the team in scoring with 13.7 points per game. That average placed her 6th in the CAA. With 58 steals, she put herself 5th in the conference.
She earned the coveted 1,000 career points in the 2025/26 season to become the 23rd player in William and Mary history. Finishing the season with 425 points, Gedde earned Second Team All-CAA.
CAA Men's Basketball
UNCW Men's Basketball
UNC Wilmington enters the 2026/27 season as the top seed in the preseason poll. They ended the 2025/26 season as regular season champions. They took only three losses during conference play, losing to William & Mary twice.
They had an unfortunate go-around in the CAA tournament after losing to Campbell in the quarterfinals.
They are the most successful program in CAA history with seven tournament titles, winning in 2025, 2017, 2016, 2006, 2003, 2002, and 2000. Those seven wins earned them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. 6 out of those 7 times, UNCW did not make it past the first round. But in 2002, they beat USC in overtime to play Indiana in the second. Their run ended there.
This season, they look to bring back that dominant team with 2 preseason First Team All-Conference players.
Hofstra Men's Basketball
What earned a third-place finish in the regular season went all the way to win the CAA Tournament. The Hofstra Lions are back with hopes of a second consecutive conference title.
Hofstra was picked third in the CAA preseason poll with Justin Moore and Deywilk Tavarez earning All-CAA Preseason honors. Their third-place finish was accompanied by 2 first-place votes.
Finishing the 2025/26 regular season with an 11-6 conference record, five out of six of their losses were back-to-back over two weeks. Heading into the CAA tournament, they put their losses aside to first beat William & Mary in the quarterfinals by 31 points. In the semifinals, they went into overtime against Towson, coming out with the win. In the championship finals, they took their second win in program history.
Their win in 2026 earned their automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they played Alabama, losing 90-70.
Patrick Wessler - UNCW
Before becoming a star player at UNCW, Patrick Wessler played at Virginia Tech. He joined UNCW ahead of the 2025/26 season, where he could go on to lead the CAA.
He earned CAA Preseason Player of the Year after a monster first season. Over 34 starting games, Wessler put up a CAA-high of 17 double-doubles. He also averaged 13.6 points and 9.5 rebounds.
Out of the five 2026 first-team All-CAA players, Wessler is the lone returner.
Eli Ellis - Charleston
After spending a year at South Carolina for his freshman year, Eli Ellis will start the 2026/27 campaign as his first for Charleston.
In his first year in college basketball, he appeared in 28 games for the Gamecocks, where he put up an average of 8.6 points per game. In 12 games, he put up double digits.
Ellis earned a career-high 20 points against Southern Mississippi, while leading the team in shooting percentage at 87.9%. This allowed him to lead freshmen in the SEC.
As one of the top guards for the Cougars, Ellis has plans on defending their conference title.
Justin Moore - Hofstra
Moore arrives at Hofstra to pursue his 5th year of eligibility after spending the past two seasons in the Atlantic 10 conference playing for Loyola Chicago. He is no stranger to the CAA, with two years of experience at Drexel before heading to Chicago.
While at Chicago, he averaged 10.9 points, 3.8 assists, and 2.2 rebounds per game in 2025/26. At Drexel, he averaged 12.5 points per game, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game.
