The American women faced Spain in the second game of pool play. Coming off of a one-sided win over Senegal, it was expected that Spain would present more of a challenge to the American squad. That assumption turned out to be true...kind of.
The first quarter was relatively close as Spain did well at preventing the United States from opening up a sizable lead. The strong defensive effort continued into the second period, though the Americans went ahead by 17 going into the half.
Something must have been said inside the locker room at halftime, because the Americans came out swinging in the second half. The American bigs just dominated in the post. Spain had some bright moments but they were extremely sparse. The Americans outscored them 29-12 in the fourth quarter.
The American women are just a nightmare matchup for the rest of the world. It's unfair having Brittney Griner and Delle Donne on the court at the same time. They're just too big and too talented. While they're getting most of the attention, our back court is just as talented.
They have a day off and then return Wednesday afternoon to face Serbia. Serbia better find a way to neutralize Griner or they're going to have a miserable time.
