Group play is over and the United States women's team has drawn Japan in the quarterfinals.
The United States has had an incredibly easy run in the Olympics as the most talented team. Each game has been a blowout, with some of our best players coming off the bench. The roster depth, as well as the incredibly high level of talent, has allowed the American women to dominate every team that they faced in group play.
It needs to be said that they are the obvious favorite to win the gold medal in Rio. They're just leagues better than everyone else. However, this also means that anything but gold would be an extreme disappointment. They need to win. Baring some sort of a disaster, that will be the outcome.
The Japanese team secured their spot by going 3-2 in group play. However, it needs to be said that Group A was only competitive due to a lack of talent. The Japanese team struggled against every team that they played. They're absurdly outmatched against this American team. There's really no other way to say it. They won't win and it likely won't be close.
For the Americans, they just need to keep doing what got them out of group play. Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner have cemented themselves as the on-court leaders on both ends of the floor. Elana Delle Donne didn't play in the game against China, so look for her to be fresh for the medal rounds. She'll be the biggest asset off the bench as she has the ability to play at any position on the court.
This team is just too big and talented. Look for the Americans to run away with it early and then keep the pressure in the second half.
