USA Defeats Japan in Olympic Quarterfinals
USA defeated a tough Japan squad in the Quarterfinals of the 2016 Olympic games.
The first elimination game for the United States Women's National Team did not disappoint. Team USA beat Japan, 111-64, in the quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon.
However, Team USA, the No. 1 seed from Group B with an average margin of victory of 40 points, had its hands full early against Japan, the No. 4 seed from Group A. With a mix of 3-pointers, crafty ball-handling and fastbreak points from the Japanese, the two teams went back and forth before Team USA took over.
After a barrage of 3-pointers by Diana Taurasi, Team USA opened up a 12-point lead in the second quarter. Once again, though, Japan came back, cutting the deficit to two, before Simone Augustus lifted Team USA to a 56-46 halftime lead.
Japan lost a lot of steam in the second half. Behind stellar shooting from Taurasi and inside play from both Sylvia Fowles and Brittney Griner, Team USA outscored Japan 25-13 in the third quarter.
The dominance continued in the fourth quarter.
Up next, USA will play the winner between France and Canada on Thursday at 1:00 PM CST.
