If revenge truly is a dish best served cold, No. 10 Mater Dei handed this one out straight from the freezer. No longer does it have to ponder the ways or count the chances to get Chino Hills back. The Monarchs took care of it Friday night.

In front of over 10,000 people at USC’s Galen Center, Mater Dei gutted out an 83-80 overtime win over the No. 9 Huskies to secure a spot in the CIA Southern Section Open Division championship.

Redemption, at last.

The picture in the aftermath was perfect. Mater Dei looked to be dialed in and had to be to avenge the crushing loss in last year’s playoffs and another at the Tarkanian Classic earlier this season.

This was a gutty win, it took grit, and it took a team effort to get it done.

Justin Sueing led Mater Dei with 25 points while Spencer Freedman tallied 17 points and nine assists. Bol Bol, the 7-foot center who didn’t play in the first meeting this season, made a huge difference with 14 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks.

For Chino Hills, Flo40 sophomore guard LaMelo Ball finished with 28 points and brother LiAngelo Ball dropped 26. The two combined to go just 17-for-65 from the floor, with the Huskies shooting only 30 percent for the game.

Still, it took everything the Monarchs had to slow down this offensive juggernaut.

The relief, although sweet, is only temporary. The work is not over. Mater Dei now will face No. 15 Bishop Montgomery in the Southern Section Open Division championship after a shocking 70-63 upset over No. 2 Sierra Canyon. There's even a chance it plays Chino Hills again in a couple of weeks.

What a wild night it was, and the underdogs got the last laugh in California.
