Iowa Fans: Get Ready For The Luka Garza Show
Iowa freshman center Luka Garza is primed to make a difference for the Hawkeyes during the 2017-18 season.
For many die-hard Iowa fans, the excitement level couldn’t be higher for freshman big man Luka Garza to start of the season. The 6-foot-11 center from Maret School (DC) is everything the Hawkeyes need in the post to make the NCAA tournament and then some. What’s crazy is he is just getting warmed up, and there are so many tricks in the bag for the Iowa faithful to see.
After averaging 22.5 points and 10.3 rebounds in four games in Europe this summer, Garza is set to make his official debut in Iowa’s first exhibition game against William Jewell College on Friday night inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City at 8 ET.
The contest is broadcasting live and will be archived on FloHoops. WATCH HERE
To give those unfamiliar with Garza’s game, here are some attributes he showed while posting 32 points and 13 rebounds in a big win over Sagemont School (FL) during the 2016 Culligan City of Palms Classic:
GARZA THE BULLY
There are many challenges with being 6-foot-11, like flying in airplanes or finding pants that fit, but playing basketball is not one of them for Garza. He has outstanding footwork, and he is, you know, big and cab score over and through many defenders.
GARZA THE DART THROWER
One of the hardest things to find is a big man who can pass well. Yes, every big man knows how to kick the ball back out, but look at this dart Garza throws to his teammate under the basket. It’s perfect and also a shame his teammate missed the shot, but that’s neither nor there. Garza has a combination of good vision, accuracy, and a strong game IQ that could be a lethal weapon in the future.
GARZA THE FANCY
Garza doesn’t really strike anyone as fancy on the court. He’s a blue-collar player who likes to get his hands dirty by battling with other guys his size and picking on those who aren’t as big, like his Sagemont opponents. But loop this highlight over and over and there is no way to say that’s not fancy. He also made the free throw, in case anyone was wondering. That gets another point on the fancy scale.
GARZA THE CLUTCH
Honestly, this should really be about how Garza can stretch the floor. He is more than capable of knocking down mid-range jumpers and even 3-pointers, but when a 6-foot-11 player drills a 3-pointer at the buzzer, it’s acceptable to label him clutch and move on. Look at that low-key reaction at the end, too. That shot was no big deal for Garza.
GARZA THE ‘I WANT NO WEAK ACTION IN THE PAINT’
This really doesn’t need much of an explanation. If a player wants to score at the rim with Garza in the lane, don’t get cute with a backdoor layup. It likely won’t end well.
GARZA THE GROUNDSKEEPER
In addition to wanting none of the weak shots like above, Garza takes care of the paint. He is so big and moves so well that covering plenty of real estate is not a problem, and if he doesn’t like something, he makes sure it gets cleared out.
Iowa fans, get ready for the Luka Garza Show. It will be one to enjoy for years to come, and it all starts on Friday.
