James Wiseman Is Dominating EYBL Opponents

There’s a reason most recruiting services — including FloHoops — see James Wiseman as one of the top players in the class of 2019. The Memphis East big man is a modern monster, wielding the ability to pass, defend, and score seemingly at will. He stuffs the stat sheet as well as he does many of his opponents’ shots.

Over the weekend in Hampton, Virginia, at the final Nike EYBL session before Peach Jam this summer, Wiseman helped the Bluff City Legends to a 4-0 record. Of course, he had some serious help from his teammates — most notably Mark Freeman, who dropped 28 points on CIA Bounce, as well as DJ Jeffries, who led Bluff City in scoring two out of those four games.

Here’s Exhibit A of Wiseman’s skill comes from the defensive end:

The 6-foot-11 forward used his length to his advantage in Hampton, too, averaging 2.75 blocks per game. He also recorded two double-doubles and three games scoring in double figures.

Exhibit B of Wiseman’s game is a slick pass:

Wiseman gathers the ball at the high post, pivots, surveys his options, and then throws a dime to a darting teammate for the easy layup. This kind of passing ability is increasingly important in the NBA for big men, especially given the prevalence of offenses centered around the pick and roll, and it’s good to see Wiseman looking to pass out of a double team like this instance shows.

If anything, Wiseman can look to do this more — in the four wins in Hampton, he only recorded one assist. Look for the big man to keep rounding his game out, and watch out for teammates Jeffries and Freeman.
