Playoffs, Game 3: Madrid heads back to Final Four

Home-court advantage was not in effect in the third games of the EuroLeague Playoffs as the four visiting teams all came away with victories. Defending champion Real Madrid became the only team to sweep its playoff series when it knocked off Panathinaikos OPAP Athens on Tuesday in the Greek capital on Tuesday. The victory clinched Los Blancos's spot in Vitoria-Gasteiz for their sixth Final Four in seven seasons. Earlier Tuesday, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul recaptured home-court advantage in its series against Zalgiris Kaunas by winning a defensive slugfest. On Wednesday, Anadolu Efes Istanbul pounded FC Barcelona Lassa and CSKA Moscow outlasted KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz. Fenerbahce, CSKA and Efes all have 2-1 series leads and can advance with road wins in Game 4 later this week.

Zalgiris Kaunas 57-66 Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul (1-2)

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul went back ahead in its series against Zalgiris Kaunas with a 57-66 victory over the Lithuanian champions in Game 3 at Zalgirio Arena. Fenerbahce now leads the best-of-five series 2-1 and can finish things off and clinch a Final Four berth on Thursday with a win. Zalgiris led by as many as 9 points in the first half, but Fenerbahce came out for the second half in a defensive mindset and allowed only 23 points over the final 20 minutes. Marko Guduric stepped up for Fenerbahce with 17 points and Jan Vesely added 10, while Luigi Datome contributed 8 points, 7 rebounds and a career-high 4 steals. Nate Wolters paced Zalgiris with 15 points.

Panathinaikos OPAP Athens 82-89 Real Madrid (0-3)

Real Madrid became the first team to qualify for the 2019 Final Four by downing Panathinaikos OPAP Athens 82-89 in Game 3 of their playoff series in the Greek capital on Tuesday. Madrid swept the best-of-five series and reached its 10th Final Four since the format was adopted in 1988. Madrid, the winningest team in EuroLeague history with 10 crowns, kept its chance to win consecutive EuroLeague titles from the first time since 1968. Facu Campazzo shined with 16 points and 10 assists and Rudy Fernandez also scored 16 for the winners. Jeffery Taylor added 13 points and Anthony Randolph and Gustavo Ayon each netted 12 for Madrid. Nick Calathes paced Panathinaikos with 17 points and 7 assists, Matt Lojeski added 16 points, DeShaun Thomas 11 and Keith Langford 10. Campazzo and Fernandez shined early and an outstanding Taylor gave Madrid an 18-23 lead after 10 minutes. Trey Thompkins boosted the visitors' margin to 25-34, but Lojeski and Ioannis Papapetrou fueled a 16-2 run that gave Panathinaikos the lead, 41-36, at halftime. A three-pointer by Langford tied the game at 58-58 through 30 minutes. Lojeski gave Panathinaikos its last lead, 68-70, but an outstanding Ayon and three-pointers by Taylor, Randolph and Campazzo sealed the outcome down the stretch.

KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz 77-84 CSKA Moscow (1-2)

CSKA Moscow regained control of its playoff series with a 77-84 victory over KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in Game 3 at Fernando Buesa Arena, site of the 2019 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four. The victory gave CSKA a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. CSKA lead for the vast majority of the game, but after Matt Janning buried a pair of threes to give Baskonia a 65-62 lead early in the fourth quarter, Nando De Colo took control and scored 14 of his season-high 28 points in the final 10 minutes to lead the visitors to victory. Cory Higgins added 11 points and Will Clyburn and Kyle Hines scored 10 apiece for the winners. Vincent Poirier was a one-man wrecking crew for Baskonia with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Darrun Hilliard scored 13 before fouling out and Johannes Voigtmann netted 12 in defeat.

FC Barcelona Lassa 68-102 Anadolu Efes Istanbul (1-2)

Anadolu Efes Istanbul led from start to finish to come within a win of a place in the Final Four, thrashing FC Barcelona Lassa 68-102 to take a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five playoff series. It was one of the biggest road wins in club history for Efes, which is yet to win a EuroLeague Playoffs series this century. Shane Larking starred with 30 points on near-perfect shooting, including 6 of 7 on three-pointers. Vasilije Micic had 14 points and 8 assists and Bryant Dunston collected 10 points and 10 rebounds among Efes's six scorers in double digits. Adam Hanga had 13 points and Kyle Kuric scored 12 in defeat.
