UConn Softball Shuts Out Stetson At THE Spring Games

The UConn softball team swept Day 1 of the Spring Games, posting a 7-0 shutout over Stetson in their second game of the day.

CLERMONT, Fla. – The UConn softball team swept Day 1 of the Spring Games, posting a 7-0 shutout over Stetson in their second game of the day. The Huskies extend their win streak to three and improve to 5-2 on the season.

The Husky offense picked right back up where they left off. Equivalent to the first game of the day, five different UConn players scored runs while the team produced 11 hits in 30 at-bats. Aziah James continued her stellar play, going 3-4 and notching three runs to pace the UConn offense. Briana Marcelino went 2-4 with a run and three RBI's, Reese Guevarra (1-4) added a pair of RBI's, with Devon Casazza (1-2), Cali Jolley and Ashlee Dahman tallying one run apiece.

Meghan O'Neil grabbed her third win of the season after six innings of work in the circle. The freshman produced two strikeouts and had a no-hitter through three.  

James got the UConn offense going in the top of the first with a single to third base and then a theft of second base. Soon after, Marcelino double-bagged one to right-center, scoring James. Marcelino gave UConn a 2-0 lead with her run off McDaniel's single to right field.

The Huskies extended their advantage with a pair of runs in the second. Casazza singled up the middle, then James singled to the shortstop advancing Casazza to second. Two possessions later, Marcelino knocked a single to second base bringing James and Casazza home.

The teams went three up and three down through the next several innings before the Huskies tacked on three more runs in the seventh.  Mackenzie Fitzpatrick subbed in to pinch hit for Casazza, then knocked a single over to right field. James followed with a single to left-center and advanced to second on the throw. On the ensuing play, Guevarra singled to left field, scoring James and pinch-runner Cali Jolley. Dahman, who pinch ran for Guevarra, added the finishing touches with her third run of the season.
