Fourth-seeded Elon scored all five of its runs with two outs as the timely hitting lifted the Phoenix over fifth-seeded Charleston 5-0 in the opening game of the CAA Softball Championship presented by Primis. 

Elon improves to 28-20 this spring and will face top-seeded Delaware at 4 p.m. this afternoon. Charleston falls to 14-36 on the season and will await the loser of No. 2 Hofstra and No. 3 UNCW in an elimination game at 6:30 p.m. this evening.

Carley Davis paced Elon at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs batted in. In the circle, three Phoenix arms combined to keep Charleston off the scoreboard. Taylor Cherry (7-6) picked up the win, throwing 5.0 innings of two-hit, shutout ball.

Elon got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Davis that scored Rebeca Murray. Murray reached on an error with two outs before stealing second during the Davis at-bat.

The Phoenix added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to push its lead to 3-0. With two outs and the bases empty, Megan Grant singled through the right side before Murray knocked her in with an RBI triple. During the ensuing at-bat, Davis recorded her second RBI single of the game, scoring Murray. 

The bottom of the fourth resulted in two more runs for Elon. Again, with two outs Allee Seering hit a two-run homer, increasing the Phoenix lead to 5-0. Seering’s third home run of the season came after Keagan Goldwait drew a walk on a full count to extend the inning.  

Charleston had runners in scoring position in the second, third, sixth and seventh but was unable to scratch any runs across in the contest. Noel Dominguez reached base three times for the Cougars, going 1-for-1 with a triple and two walks.
