Michigan's Backcourt Leads Charge In Upset Over No. 25 Gonzaga

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands — Katelynn Flaherty was forced to sit there, on the edge of her seat, helpless. By no means did the Michigan junior guard want to be there, on the bench for the first time all game, but she had to after fouling out in the final minute late Thursday night.

As it turned out, it didn’t matter. Flaherty had already done enough damage. All that didn’t happen was the perfect sight of the ball being in her hands as the buzzer sounded to officially cap off Michigan’s big 78-66 upset of No. 25 Gonzaga.

Throughout the nightcap of the Paradise Jam, Flaherty was brilliant, and posted 22 points, three rebounds, and seven assists, while fellow guard Siera Thompson added 21 to pull off the biggest shock of Thanksgiving Day at the University of the Virgin Islands.

A hot start helped. A couple daggers in the second half turned it from possible to a reality. And while there are still two more games, the sounds of cheering echoing in the hallways outside the locker room made it clear this was a huge win for the Wolverines.
