SPRINGFIELD, MA — The tension was so thick inside Blake Arena it could have been cut with a knife. Although the season is far from over, so much was on the line on Monday night. It was a heavyweight showdown at the Spalding Hoophall Classic, and No. 3 Sierra Canyon (CA) made sure to deliver the knockout blow.

Marvin Bagley III, the nation’s No. 1 junior, scored 21 points and senior point guard Remy Martin had 18 points, eight rebounds and 13 assists as the Trailblazers stunned No. 1 La Lumiere School (IN) 76-74.

This was not the typical high school game -- far from it. It was a war, and it took a late push by Sierra Canyon to hand La Lumiere its first loss of the season.

In addition to Bagley and Martin, the game MVP, Cody Riley delivered 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Terrance McBride got timely buckets to add 13.

For the Lakers, big man Jaren Jackson poured in 21 points, and Brian Bowen had 18 in the loss.

Only time will tell what kind of late-season implications this will have, but in the moment, it was as special as any game of the year.
