Weekend Scoop: Trevon Duval Creates Massive Beach Blast Poster

Weekend Scoop: Duval's Beach Blast Poster

Trevon Duval caught the ball on the right wing Saturday and began directing traffic. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. After all, it’s part of why the IMG Academy (FL) senior is considered the best point guard in the country. Then, just a blink of an eye later, everyone at the Beach Blast in Bradenton, Florida, saw what makes him so special.

All it took was two dribbles before the 6-foot-3 Duval was cleared for takeoff. What came next was one of the craziest poster dunks of the entire 2016-17 campaign.

Duval, the No. 5 prospect in 2017, didn’t have to stuff the stat sheet for the Ascenders to get two comfortable wins — 90-49 over SPIRE Institute and 84-70 over Trinity International — at their home event, but he and his teammates put on quite the show to highlight the weekend.

TOP-RANKED RAIDERS TAKEN TO THE WIRE

As if this season hasn’t already been special for No. 1 Nathan Hale, it added another piece to an amazing resume over the weekend. Inside the Bellevue College gym, the Raiders became took the SeaKing District crown over reigning Washington state champion Rainier Beach 88-84. Flo40 No. 1 Michael Porter Jr. was sensational once again with 44 points. Sure, it wasn’t easy, and Nathan Hale was challenged. But nothing is given this time of year, and the Raiders will get everyone’s best shot the remainder of the way.

CALIFORNIA’S BIG FOUR ALL SURVIVE

The first round is supposed to be the easiest, right? Well, it was for some but not for everyone in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Open Division bracket: Ninth-ranked Chino Hills breezed past JSerra Catholic (105-75); No. 10 Mater Dei had no trouble with Crossroads (80-44); and No. 15 Bishop Montgomery got by Oak Park (83-68). However, No. 2 Sierra Canyon got a little bit of a scare from Heritage Christian. Behind 62 combined points from big men Cody Riley and Marvin Bagley III, the Trailblazers survived 99-93, but this is one reason why this bracket is so crazy competitive.

CRESCENT CITY TAKEOVER

With the NBA All-Star Weekend getting most of the attention in New Orleans the last couple of days, some of the news that may have escaped the limelight involved some of the top prep players and teams that were in town for the Jordan Brand Invitational. Starting on Thursday, No. 7 Oak Hill Academy (VA) defeated Scotlandville (LA) 81-67.

To cap it off, Montverde Academy (FL) sophomore guard RJ Barrett won Most Valuable Player honors at the Basketball Without Borders Global Camp.

MIKE JONES GETS No. 400

Mike Jones has made DeMatha Catholic (MD) a household name by leading powerhouse teams and churning out NBA talent. And for most of the season, the Stags have been in the FloHoops Top 25. Although they dropped out this past week, they might be right back in after knocking off rival and No. 21 Gonzaga 82-75. The win, highlighted by Ryan Allen’s career-high 34 points, also gave Jones win No. 400 career. It’s quite the milestone, and the game itself was further proof how intense the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Tournament will be this week.

SIMEON TAKES CHICAGO PUBLIC LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

It was a wild one, indeed, but Simeon (IL), which had been consistently in the top 25 for most of the season as well, took down Morgan Park 68-64 to capture the Chicago Public League championship. Guard Kezo Brown led the way with 26 points, and the emotion he had in the pictures on social media said it all.
