Dominant Shadow Mountain Cruises Through State Playoffs

In Arizona, dominance comes in the form of insanely pesky defense, a balanced attack with some under-the-radar star power, and a former NBA player as the head coach. No. 25 Shadow Mountain (AZ) is not your typical high school powerhouse by any means, but nobody can argue that it works incredibly well.

The Matadors made its run through the Arizona 4A Conference state tournament look easy. Almost too easy. They won their first three playoff games by 40, 68, and 40 points before completely dismantling Tuscon Salpointe Catholic, 81-48, to capture its second consecutive state title over the weekend.

Of course, there was a scuffle in the third quarter involving Jaelen House of the blowout victory that stole the headlines, but that didn’t stop Mike Bibby’s squad from making history with now 33-straight wins and 51 consecutive against teams from the state.

Marcus Shaver dropped 29 points, House added 19 before his ejection and Jovan Blacksher pitched in 12 as the Matadors forced 22 turnovers and held the Salpointe Catholic to just 30 percent shooting at Gila River Arena.

Sitting at 27-0, Shadow Mountain has some time to soak in an unblemished campaign, but will eagerly wait by the phone to see if it gets one of the few spots for Dick’s Nationals next month.
