Paul VI: The Coin Flip Kings Of The WCAC

null

The coaches for No. 22 Paul VI (VA) and No. 23 Gonzaga (DC) stood a few feet apart, facing each other, while a small crowd gathered around. As if there needed to be something more to be competitive about, the seed for this upcoming weekend’s Washington Catholic Athletic Conference came down to a coin flip, following Paul VI's win over DeMatha Catholic (MD) on its home court on Monday.

The call was heads. The quarter landed on heads. Paul VI is the No. 1 seed in one of this season's most highly anticipated conference tournaments.

Ask around and some call it the best conference in the country. It’s hard to argue with ranked squads PVI and Gonzaga, DeMatha Catholic, which spent the majority of the season in the top 25, St. John’s and Bishop O’Connell among its members. It’s now time to find out which team is the best.

Paul VI did not just get lucky on a coin toss, however. Going 15-3 in the league is no joke, especially since the Panthers are undersized compared to most of the squads they have to face each week.

Nothing will be easy for Paul VI, which is led by versatile junior Brandon Slater and a strong group of seniors. An opening-round matchup on Friday night with Bishop McNamara, which defeated Good Counsel 49-31 on Wednesday, is proof.

The road to the championship is on. It’s up for grabs. Buckle up!
