The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) enters the 2026-27 men's basketball season with plenty of questions at the top of the league.

Michigan Tech Men's Basketball and Northern Michigan finished tied atop the conference standings last season, with Grand Valley State just one game behind. Now, Northern Michigan is entering a new era, Michigan Tech is looking to stay on top and the rest of the conference is coming for both of them.

Here are five things to know about GLIAC men's basketball heading into the 2026-27 season.

1. The GLIAC Features 11 Men's Basketball Teams

The GLIAC features 11 men's basketball teams for the 2026-27 season, with programs spanning Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana.

The conference lineup includes Davenport, Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan, UW-Parkside, Purdue Northwest, Roosevelt, Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State (MI).

Those 11 programs will spend the winter battling for position in the conference standings and a spot in the GLIAC Tournament.

2. Michigan Tech And Northern Michigan Led The Conference Last Season

There wasn't much separating Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan in 2025-26. Both finished conference play at 16-4 to share the top spot in the GLIAC standings.

Michigan Tech finished 29-7 overall, while Northern Michigan went 28-7. Grand Valley State was right behind them at 15-5 in conference play and 25-7 overall.

With just one game separating the top three teams in the conference standings, there wasn't much room for error last season. The question now is whether those same programs can stay at the top or if somebody else can break through.

3. Northern Michigan Enters A New Era

Northern Michigan will have one major difference in 2026-27: Matt Majkrzak won't be on the sideline.

Majkrzak left the Wildcats in March 2026 to become the head coach at Northern Illinois after leading Northern Michigan to a 28-7 overall record in 2025-26. He also earned his second GLIAC Coach of the Year honor, having previously won the award in 2023-24.

That leaves Northern Michigan trying to maintain the momentum of one of the conference's top programs while adjusting to new leadership.

4. Keep An Eye On The GLIAC's Returning Talent

With heavy turnover across the league, returning production will carry immense value once conference play begins.

Lake Superior State guard Karter Richards headlines the conference's returning talent after capturing GLIAC Freshman of the Year honors in 2025-26. Richards averaged 10.2 points per game last season and started the Lakers' final 12 contests, giving LSSU a young guard to build around heading into 2026-27.

Other key veterans returning include Davenport's Curtis Jackson, an All-GLIAC Second Team and All-Defensive Team selection, and Grand Valley State forward Shamus Thompson, an All-Defensive Team selection who led the Lakers in rebounds and blocked shots last season.

Meanwhile, several of the GLIAC's top teams will have to replace major contributors from a year ago. Michigan Tech moves forward without Marcus Tomashek and Dawson Nordgaard, while Grand Valley State loses Ethan Alderink and Ferris State loses Mykel Bingham. Northern Michigan also faces significant turnover after losing Dylan Kuehl and seeing Cal Klesmit follow former Wildcats coach Matt Majkrzak to Northern Illinois.

With so many familiar names gone, returning players who already have experience producing in the GLIAC could have an immediate advantage in 2026-27.

5. The Road Leads To The GLIAC Tournament

The regular-season race matters, but the GLIAC Tournament is where the conference championship and an automatic NCAA Tournament bid will be decided.

Last season showed just how tight that race can get. Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan finished tied atop the standings, while Grand Valley State was only one game behind.

That doesn't leave much room for a bad week. Once conference play gets underway, every game will matter in the fight for seeding and a chance to play for the GLIAC championship.
