5 Things To Know About Landmark Conference Men's Basketball For the 2026-2027 Season

Men’s basketball in the Landmark Conference can get pretty intense, and there is enough talent spread across the 10-team scene that the trophy at the conference tournament, and the Landmark’s automatic bid to the playoffs, have gone to a different school each of the last four seasons.

At the end of the 2025-2026 campaign, Susquehanna was holding the hardware, while Catholic University, the top team during the regular season, was able to join the River Hawks in the NCAA Division IIII Basketball Championship.

But despite having such a competitive conference, the Landmark teams have hit a bit of a wall when it comes to the quest for national championships.

In fact, only six times since basketball debuted in the conference for the 2007-2008 season, has more than one Landmark team made the national bracket. The banner year was 2016, when three teams advanced, and two teams made it in 2008, 2015, 2025 and 2026.

The best finish for a Landmark team has been reaching the sectional final/national quarterfinals. Scranton did it in 2012, and Catholic did it in 2025.

The only team currently in the conference with a national title is Catholic. It happened in 2001, four years before the Landmark Conference was founded.

Is this the year the momentum from the regular season carries through the conference tournament and into the national tournament?

And how will things look without last season’s Landmark Player of the Year (CJ Ruoff, Catholic) and Landmark Defensive Player of the Year (David Musial, Drew), who both were seniors?

Before things get going during the first week of November, here’s a look at Landmark Conference men’s basketball, what happened last year and some things we can look forward to in the new campaign:

Susquehanna Coming Off Record-Setting Season

The Susquehanna football team was dominant in recent seasons, posting a 43-7 record from 2022-2025 and winning four consecutive conference titles – one in the Centennial Conference and three straight since the debut of the Landmark Conference in 2023.

The basketball team has fared well, too, and the River Hawks made history last season with both teams winning conference titles and automatic bids to their respective postseasons.

To clarify, the Landmark Conference was founded in 2005. Basketball was introduced for the 2007-2008 season. Football was added in 2023.

On the gridiron, Susquehanna finished the season at 11-3 overall and 6-0 in Landmark games. The squad made the most of the playoff opportunity, winning three games in the 2025 Division III Football Championship, before bowing out with a spot in the national semifinals on the line.

On the hardwood, the River Hawks squeaked through the regular season and did just enough to qualify for the six-team 2026 Landmark Conference Men’s Basketball Championship as the No. 6 seed after going 9-9 in conference games during the season.

Susquehanna actually tied with Moravian in conference play but earned the final spot in the championship bracket via tiebreaker after they split their two regular-season meetings.

That’s when the River Hawks kicked things into gear and rolled through the Landmark tournament with wins over Scranton (85-78), Drew (93-87) and Wilkes (76-72), while becoming the first team in the short history of the Landmark Conference to win three consecutive games on the road and win the tournament as the sixth seed.

In the final, Susquehanna rallied from 11 points down late in the second half, using a 19-2 run to erase the deficit.

Susquehanna got to represent the Landmark Conference as its automatic qualifier for the 2026 Division III Men’s Basketball Championship, and Catholic, which topped the Landmark standings during the regular season, earned an at-large selection.

The River Hawks lost their first-round clash with Redlands (97-75), and Catholic went 1-1, beating Western Connecticut (71-69), before losing to Tufts (74-60).

Susquehanna Had A Two-Sport Star Leading The Way

The River Hawks found record success in football and basketball last year, and one player helped both causes.

Junior Logan Rhoades played defensive back for the football team and recorded 10 tackles in 12 games. Across 2024 and 2025, he played in 19 games for Susquehanna.

After the football playoffs concluded, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound guard changed uniforms and played in 11 basketball games for the River Hawks. He averaged 9.7 minutes and 3.6 points per game, while knocking down 11 3-pointers on 31 attempts.

Prior to transferring to Susquehanna for the 2024 season, Rhoades played wide receiver at Colgate University (2023).

So far, he is not playing football for the River Hawks this year, and the 2026-2027 basketball roster has not yet been released.

Catholic Ready To Be Tested During 2026-2027 Season

The Catholic University men’s basketball team was the only squad in the Landmark Conference to win 20 games last year (20-8). The Cardinals also had the best record in conference play (15-3), which earned them the top seed for the 2026 Landmark Conference Men’s Basketball Championship.

Unfortunately, things kind of fizzed out from there, and even though Catholic earned an at-large bid to the 2026 Division III Men’s Basketball Championship, the Cardinals made a quick exit, going 1-1.

Shining during the regular season isn’t new to the team, and Catholic has made frequent appearances in the national tournament – 17 in all – since joining Division III in the early 1980s.

They first danced on the biggest stage in Division III in 1993, made six consecutive tournament appearances from 1999-2004 and picked up a national title along the way, besting William Paterson in the 2001 final, 76-62.

Overall, the Cardinals are 21-15 at the Division III tournament and are in the midst of another memorable run.

They advanced in 2024 for the first time since 2016, and they’ve now heard their name called three consecutive times. However, Catholic has only won the Landmark Conference tournament three times since its introduction in 2008, which means their play during the season has consistently been impressive enough to earn at-large selections.

Perhaps the secret to the Cardinals’ continued success is their desire to challenge themselves against the best competition.

Catholic’s 26-game slate for the upcoming season includes an early showdown with 2026 national semifinalist Christopher Newport (Nov. 14), a trip to face 2026 Division III national champion Mary Washington (Jan. 3) and two meetings with last year’s Landmark tournament winner Susquehanna (Jan. 13 and Feb. 10).

The Cardinals will get their season underway Nov. 6 at the Bear Bash Tip-Off Tournament in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and they’ll spend part of the December holiday season in Washington, D.C., for the Holiday Classic (Dec. 21-22).

Who Won The 2026 Landmark Conference Men’s Basketball Championship?

As mentioned above, Susquehanna made a historic run through the conference tournament, becoming the first team in the short history of the Landmark Conference to win three consecutive games on the road and win the tournament as the sixth seed.

In the final, the River Hawks rallied from 11 points down late in the second half and used a 19-2 run to erase the deficit.

How Many Teams Participate In The Division III Basketball Championship?

The number of participating teams for the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship has changed many times over the years.

The inaugural edition in 1975 had 30 teams. There were 28 in 1976, and then it went back to 30.

In 1980, there were 32 teams. In 1989, it expanded to 40. Finally, in 1995, the field ballooned to 64 teams split into four sectionals, but the change only lasted three years, before it was changed to 48.

The number slowly increased again, until the full 64-team bracket returned in 2017.

The NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship needed just one year to double in size, as 32 teams participated in 1983. That number remained steady, though regional brackets were introduced in 1989. In 1994, 40 teams played. Then 64 in 1995.

Denison & Mary Washington Are The Reigning Division III National Champions

The last four teams standing in the 2026 NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship were Denison, NYU, Scranton and Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and Denison went on to claim its first national title with a 55-41 victory over Scranton at the Cregger Center in Salem, Virginia.

On the men’s side, it was Christopher Newport, Emory, Mary Washington and Trinity College (CT) at the national semifinals in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with Mary Washington topping Emory 75-73 for the trophy in Indianapolis.
