The Chargers begin the year as the preseason favorite, but the Bulldogs and several established programs have the experience and talent to make the race interesting. A strong group of returning players will headline the conference, while 30 newcomers are looking to make an immediate impact.
With conference play approaching, here are five things to know about the teams, players and matchups that could define the upcoming season.
1. UAH Has A Target On Its Back
UAH enters the season with expectations unlike any other year in program history. The Chargers captured their first GSC regular-season title last season, finished 32-6 overall and posted a dominant 21-1 conference record before advancing to the NCAA Division II Final Four.
Those accomplishments helped UAH earn the top spot in the preseason coaches poll for the first time in program history. The Chargers collected 96 points and seven first-place votes. Senior guard Bella White returns after averaging 9.2 points and 3.9 assists per game, giving UAH an experienced playmaker as it looks to defend its position.
2. Union Is Ready To Challenge Again
Union (TN) sits second in the preseason poll with 90 points and three first-place votes. The Bulldogs won the GSC Tournament last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, establishing themselves as a legitimate threat to UAH.
Senior guard Olivia Lee will be central to Union’s hopes. The conference’s leading returning scorer averaged 17.0 points per game while shooting 42% from the field and adding 2.8 assists. Lee’s scoring ability and experience give the Bulldogs a proven offensive leader as they pursue another championship run.
3. The Middle Of The Pack Could Get Interesting
Lee checks in at third with 80 points, followed by Delta State at 73 and Trevecca Nazarene at 70. The narrow separation between Delta State and Trevecca suggests the battle for position could be competitive.
Valdosta State, West Alabama, and Mississippi Christian round out the next group in the poll. Montevallo, AUM and Christian Brothers will look to outperform their preseason projections. With eight teams qualifying for the conference tournament, every league win could matter when March arrives.

- Union (3), 90 points
- Lee (1), 80 points

4. Veteran Stars And New Faces Will Shape The Race
The preseason All-GSC team features five players to watch: Lee junior guard Libby Privett, Trevecca senior guard Jordan Gillies.
Gillies averaged 16.1 points and 4.1 assists per game, while Whalen contributed 14.0 points and 8.6 rebounds and led the conference with 2.4 steals per game. Privett averaged 11.6 points and converted 93 of 113 free-throw attempts.
Beyond those established names, the conference selected 30 newcomers from all 11 programs. Their contributions could change rotations and give teams an unexpected advantage.
5. The Road To March Starts Soon
Union opens the season November 6 against Harding at the D2CCA Tip Off Classic. Most GSC programs begin November 13, while conference play starts December 3 and runs through February 26.
The league schedule features a double-round robin format over 12 weeks, with a pause for the NCAA Division II winter break from December 21-27. The GSC Championship begins March 1 with quarterfinals, followed by semifinals March 4 and the championship game March 7. All tournament rounds will be played at campus sites, giving higher-seeded teams home-court advantage.
With the preseason favorites established and challengers close behind, the conference race is set to deliver plenty of meaningful matchups.
