St. Thomas (TX) dominated conference play last season, captured its second consecutive SCAC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Division III national quarterfinals. The Celts return as the preseason favorite, but Concordia (TX), LeTourneau and Colorado College are among the programs looking to close the gap.
With a new championship venue and six postseason spots available, the race will feature familiar contenders and opportunities for teams to make a statement. Here are five things to know before tipoff.
1. St. Thomas Is The Team To Beat
St. Thomas enters the season after one of the most successful campaigns in program history. The Celts finished 29-2 overall, went undefeated in conference play at 16-0 and captured their second consecutive SCAC Tournament championship.
Their dominance earned them nine of 10 first-place votes and 81 points in the 2026-27 preseason coaches’ poll. St. Thomas also reached the NCAA Division III national quarterfinals for the first time in program history.
Senior Corey Thompson returns after leading the team with 15.4 points per game last season. Nicholas Buffalo, the reigning SCAC Tournament MVP, also returns after recording 21 points and 13 rebounds in the championship-game victory over Concordia Texas. With proven production and championship experience, the Celts have a strong foundation for another title run.
SCAC Men's Preseason Poll
- St. Thomas (Texas) (9), 81 points
- Concordia (Texas) (1), 72 points
- LeTourneau, 65 points
- Colorado College, 56 points
- Centenary (LA), 45 points
- Dallas, 35 points
- Texas Lutheran, 34 points
- Austin College, 31 points
- Ozarks (AR), 22 points
- Hendrix, 9 points
2. Concordia Texas Is The Closest Challenger
Concordia Texas finished second in the preseason poll with 72 points and the remaining first-place vote. The Tornados went 14-2 in conference play last season and finished 23-5 overall, establishing themselves as St. Thomas’ primary challenger.
Concordia advanced to the SCAC Tournament championship game after defeating LeTourneau 94-87 in the semifinals. Percy Green led the way with 29 points and 10 rebounds in that victory. The Tornados ultimately fell 92-74 to St. Thomas in the final.
That championship-game appearance demonstrated Concordia’s ability to compete for the conference crown. The next step is closing the gap against the defending champions. With another season of experience behind the program, the Tornados will look to turn their runner-up finish into a championship opportunity.
3. LeTourneau And Colorado College Bring Different Challenges
LeTourneau earned third place in the preseason poll with 65 points after finishing 12-4 in conference play last season. The YellowJackets won the SCAC Blue Division and advanced to the tournament semifinals before falling to Concordia.
Colorado College placed fourth in the preseason poll with 56 points. The Tigers finished 10-6 in Gold Division play and reached the SCAC Tournament quarterfinals. However, Colorado College faces a significant challenge replacing Asher Nofziger, who led the team in scoring and rebounding over the previous two seasons.
Centenary rounds out the preseason top five with 45 points. Dallas, Texas Lutheran, Austin College, the University of the Ozarks and Hendrix complete the 10-team poll.
With the top six teams qualifying for the SCAC Championship, the competition extends beyond the leading contenders. Strong conference stretches could reshape the standings and determine which programs earn a chance to compete for the title.
4. The Championship Moves To A New Stage
The 2027 SCAC Basketball Championships will feature a major change: the tournament moves to Brookshire Grocery Arena in Shreveport-Bossier, Louisiana. It will be the first time in conference history that the championship is held at a neutral-site venue.
The event also marks the 25th anniversary edition of the SCAC Basketball Championships. The top six teams will compete for the conference title and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
St. Thomas will try to defend its crown in a different environment, while Concordia, LeTourneau and the other contenders will have an opportunity to claim the championship. The neutral-site setting adds another layer of intrigue to a tournament where a single win or loss can change a team’s season.
5. The Road To March Starts In November
The 2026-27 season begins in November, with St. Thomas opening its campaign on November 6. Conference play begins in December, giving teams an early stretch of nonconference games to establish rotations, develop chemistry and prepare for league competition.
The preseason poll provides an initial look at the conference hierarchy, but the standings will ultimately be determined on the court. St. Thomas will aim to continue its remarkable conference run, Concordia will look to challenge for first place, and LeTourneau will attempt to build on its division championship.
For teams outside the preseason top three, consistency will be especially important. With only six tournament spots available, every conference victory could carry postseason consequences.
The SCAC has a clear favorite entering the season, but the combination of established contenders, a new championship venue and a limited tournament field sets up another compelling race for the conference crown.
