Last season, the University of Delaware women’s basketball team saw a bit of a letdown under first-year head coach Sarah Jenkins, at least compared to recent success, but Blue Hens definitely are on the radar this year.

The Blue Hens finished the 2022-2023 campaign at 16-14 overall and 9-9 in Coastal Athletic Association play. They made a quick exit from the 2023 CAA Women’s Championship, losing to Hampton in the second round, and were unsuccessful in their bid to repeat as the tournament champions.

During the 2021-2022 season, Delaware (24-8, 15-3) finished second in the CAA regular-season standings behind Drexel but went on to win the 2022 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship, defeating the Dragons in the final. Delaware lost to Maryland in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Jenkins will lead her team into the 2023-2024 season with seven talented new players, which includes a combination of transfers and recruits. Among the incoming players is 5-foot-9 freshman guard Grace Sundback, who chose Delaware from more than 20 Division I offers.

The work Jenkins has done to help the Blue Hens find their stride has not gone unnoticed, as Delaware landed at No. 4 in the 2023-2024 CAA Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll.

At the same time, two of the team’s seven returning players—fifth-year center Klarke Sconiers and senior forward Chloe Wilson—were among the All-CAA preseason honorable mentions.

Sconiers started 24 games for Delaware last year, her first year with the team, and averaged 12.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. She was named to the All-CAA third team for the 2022-2023 season and was recognized as the CAA Player of the Week one time. She previously played at Minnesota.

Wilson will make her Delaware debut this season, having transferred from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she started all 32 games and averaged 17.2 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists on the way to first-team All-NEC honors last season—just one of many accolades she earned in her time with the Knights.

Here’s a look at the University of Delaware women’s basketball schedule for the 2023-2024 season.

When Is The CAA Women’s Basketball Tournament?

The 2024 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship will be held March 13-17 at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C.

It will come on the heels of the 2024 men’s event (March 8-12), as the conference and venue agreed to a four-year contract that will allow these championship tournaments to return each year through the 2026-2027 campaign.

The winner will earn an automatic berth into the Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.

When Is The 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship?

The NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship will offer LSU the opportunity to defend its national title, won in March 2023 over Iowa, 102-85.

Selection Sunday, which will fall on March 17, is the day the 68 teams for the postseason bracket are announced.

The First Four will kick things off March 20-21, with eight teams (the four lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the four lowest-seeded at-large teams) battling for the opportunity to compete in the main 64-team bracket.

The road to the national championship will continue with the opening round of play (Round of 64) on March 22-23. The Round of 32 will take place March 24-25. The top 16 seeds will host the first- and second-round games.

Continuing with a tradition established in 2023, the Sweet 16 (regional semifinals) and Elite Eight (regional finals) will be held across two sites – Albany, New York, and Portland, Oregon. These rounds will take place March 29-April 1.

The 2024 women’s Final Four (national semifinals and national championship) will be held at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland on April 5 and April 7, respectively.
