The 2023-2024 basketball season is just getting underway, but the Monmouth Hawks aren’t wasting any time—they’ve already announced three national letters of intent for the next season.

Big things are happening in New Jersey since the Hawks’ inaugural campaign in the Coastal Athletic Association concluded with the title at the 2023 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship as the No. 7 seed. It was the program’s first conference title since the mid-1980s.

Monmouth was the first No. 7 seed in history to win the event, a feat that included beating the top three seeds along the way. The victory earned the Hawks the CAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which marked their first appearance since 1983.

Though Monmouth lost to Tennessee Tech in the First Four and didn’t make the main 64-team bracket, getting that far helped the Monmouth stock rise. After being picked to finish 10th in the conference last season, the Hawks now are slated to finish sixth this year, per the 2023-2024 CAA Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll.

Monmouth finished last season with an 18-16 overall record, which included a 9-9 effort in conference play. That’s a noteworthy turnaround for head coach Ginny Boggess, who took over after the team’s 2-16 performance during the 2020-2021 season and helped the Hawks to a 14-16 mark the following year, before raising the bar again last season.

Not long after Monmouth’s postseason success in 2023, the roster started growing and the support staff was solidified.

Three transfers and an incoming freshman were announced in May. A new assistant coach was announced in June. Boggess signed a five-year contract extension in July. A new director of program operations was brought in during September.

Of the returning Monmouth players, senior guard Ariana Vanderhoop landed among the All-CAA preseason honorable mentions. She averaged 10.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game during her junior season.

Vanderhoop is one of seven players, including three starters, back from last year’s championship team. Also returning is senior center Belle Kranbuhl, who led the team in blocks with 64.

Here’s a look at the Monmouth University women’s basketball schedule for the 2023-2024 season.

When Is The CAA Women’s Basketball Tournament?

The 2024 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship will be held March 13-17 at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C.

It will come on the heels of the 2024 men’s event (March 8-12), as the conference and venue agreed to a four-year contract that will allow these championship tournaments to return each year through the 2026-2027 campaign.

The winner will earn an automatic berth into the Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.

When Is The 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship?

The NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship will offer LSU the opportunity to defend its national title, won in March 2023 over Iowa, 102-85.

Selection Sunday, which will fall on March 17, is the day the 68 teams for the postseason bracket are announced.

The First Four will kick things off March 20-21, with eight teams (the four lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the four lowest-seeded at-large teams) battling for the opportunity to compete in the main 64-team bracket.

The road to the national championship will continue with the opening round of play (Round of 64) on March 22-23. The Round of 32 will take place March 24-25. The top 16 seeds will host the first- and second-round games.

Continuing with a tradition established in 2023, the Sweet 16 (regional semifinals) and Elite Eight (regional finals) will be held across two sites – Albany, New York, and Portland, Oregon. These rounds will take place March 29-April 1.

The 2024 women’s Final Four (national semifinals and national championship) will be held at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland on April 5 and April 7, respectively.
