The NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament has produced nearly seven decades of memorable teams, dominant programs and historic seasons. Using the official championship history as a guide, an all-time 64-team tournament bracket can be constructed from the teams that won the national title since the event began in 1957.

Because the championship history lists the winners and runners-up from every title game, each champion season was treated as its own “team,” allowing multiple historic seasons from the same program to appear in the bracket.

This approach reflects the reality that some programs — such as Kentucky Wesleyan, Evansville and Northwest Missouri State — built dynasties across multiple years.

The dataset includes 68 completed championships between 1957 and 2025, excluding the canceled 2020 tournament. To build a 64-team field using only the championship-history data, the strongest champion seasons were ranked based on title-game margin of victory. The top 64 champions were then seeded and placed into four regions.

The result is a hypothetical all-time NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament, where the best championship teams in the history of the division compete in a modern 64-team format.

So … who wins?
