What To Know About Lone Star Conference Women's Basketball Ahead Of The 2026-2027 Season

The Lone Star Conference continues to have a huge presence on the biggest stage in women’s college basketball and sent five teams to the 2026 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship.

Leading the way was Texas Woman's University, which has won four consecutive regular-season titles, and did so last season with a 20-0 run through the conference slate, a first for the Pioneers.

That momentum continued through the LSC Women’s Basketball Championship, where TWU picked up its third straight title and headed off to the national tournament on a 28-game winning streak.

But will Texas Woman’s be the team to beat again during the 2026-2027 season? We’ll break it down below, and college hoops fans can watch it all unfold live on FloCollege and the FloSports app.

Anyone who follows collegiate sports knows success can be cyclical, but how long the peaks and valleys will last is one of the world’s greatest mysteries.

Is it based on the presence of one player? A group that just gels like no other? Is it because of the coach? Is it success that attracts talent and leads to dynasties?

About Texas Woman’s Basketball And The LSC Hopefuls

Texas Woman’s appearance in the 2026 Division II Women’s Basketball Championship was the team’s fifth in a row.

In 2024, the Pioneers reached the title game but fell short against Minnesota State. Including that season, and the two that followed, TWU has posted a record of 98-9.

Prior to the recent run of success, however, the Pioneers suffered a handful of losing seasons, while West Texas A&M reigned supreme in the LSC. See, cyclical.

The Lady Buffs, and many other talented LSC programs, have been hiding in plain sight and waiting for TWU to slip up.

WTAMU wasn’t far behind in the conference standings last year (18-2) and gave the Pioneers a run in the LSC Championship final, falling 54-46.

They eventually were joined in the Division II playoff bracket by UT Tyler, Lubbock Christian and Eastern New Mexico, the next three teams in the LSC standings, all of which also could get hot at any time and make a run at the regular-season or tournament title – or both.

Unfortunately for the conference, Texas Woman’s and Eastern New Mexico had to face off in the first round of the 2026 Division II Championship, while UT Tyler and West Texas A&M did the same.

TWU and UT Tyler prevailed, but they both ended up losing to Colorado Mesa in successive rounds, prematurely ending the LSC’s bid for a national title.

As the season concluded, Texas Woman’s slid from No. 1 to No. 6 in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Top 25, and WTAMU landed at No. 13.

Does that mean anything for the upcoming season? Probably not, but it usually takes a bit for teams really showcase what they’re working with in the new campaign.

One thing the Pioneers won’t be working with is the 2025-2026 LSC Player of the Year/Defensive Player of the Year Gabby Elliott, who spent two seasons helping TWU succeed on the hardwood.

However, the squad still has the reigning LSC Coach of the Year, Beth Jillson, who has been at the helm since 2007 and has seen the Pioneers through all kinds of ups and downs.

More information and analysis of what’s ahead for the LSC will be available during this year’s Lone Star Conference Hoops Week, which will take place virtually from Oct. 19-23 and feature preseason polls, preseason players of the year, watch lists and interviews with players and coaches from all 17 basketball programs.

What Teams Play Basketball In The Lone Star Conference?

The LSC includes 17 women’s teams and 17 men’s teams, and the schedule for each squad will feature 20 conference games – 10 at home and 10 on the road.

The 17 women’s basketball programs in the LSC are:

When Is The 2027 LSC Basketball Tournament?

The eight-team single-elimination Lone Star Conference Women’s Basketball Championship will take place March 2-7.

However, the action initially will include the No. 9 team in the conference for a first-round showdown with the No. 8 seed, at the home of the latter.

The winner of that game will be added to the main bracket, with the quarterfinals, semifinals and final taking place March 4, 6 and 7, respectively, at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.

West Texas A&M owns the most LSC women’s basketball titles with 16, including five in a row from 1987 to 1991 and another three-peat from 2008-2010.

The Lady Buffs have reached the tournament 37 times since the inaugural event in 1983 and have played for the title on 24 occasions.

Once again, the LSC Tournament champion will earn the league’s automatic qualification to the 2027 Division II Women’s Basketball Championship.

All selections and seeding for the national tournament will be announced March 7, and regional competition at campus sites around the country will begin March 12.

Who Makes The Division II Basketball Tournament?

There again will be 64 teams participating in the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship.

That includes 23 automatic qualifiers (conference champions/representatives) and 41 at-large bids based on regional rankings, overall records, strength of schedule and head-to-head results.

From the quarterfinals to the championship, the 2027 Division II Women’s Basketball Championship all games will be played at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Arena in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The quarterfinals will take place March 22, the semifinals will be March 24 and the champion will be determined March 26.
