UConn Women's Basketball Guard Azzi Fudd Tears ACL, MCL; Will Miss Season

UConn Women's Basketball standout junior guard Azzi Fudd will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 season due to meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament tears in her right knee, the program confirmed in a news release Wednesday, two days before they play No.2-ranked UCLA at the Cayman Island Classic.

Fudd tore her ACL and MCL during practice on Nov. 14, per the release. She had missed the No. 6-ranked Huskies’ past two games, both wins, against Maryland and Minnesota last week as a result of the injury.

"We're all just so upset for Azzi," Geno Auriemma said in a release. " She worked hard to be healthy for this season, and it's unfortunate when you put in a lot of hard work and have a setback like this. Azzi loves the game and works tirelessly. I'm confident she'll rehab with the same work ethic and come back better than ever. We'll obviously miss her presence on the court, but Azzi will continue to be a great teammate and an important part of this team this season. Our program will support Azzi through her recovery however we can."

Fudd was the No.1-ranked player in her recruiting class in 2021 and helped the Huskies get to the National Championship Game as a freshman.

The former Gatorade National Player of the Year in high school had started both games she played in this season for the 3-1 Huskies, averaging 11.0 points and 2.5 assists per game.

It’s another blow in what’s been a brutal stretch of injury luck for UConn over the past few seasons as its 2022-23 roster was ravaged by them, most notably in the case of former National Player of the Year Paige Bueckers missing the entirety of that season after tearing her ACL in an offseason pickup game.

Fudd has additionally missed significant time in college due to injury, as well, sitting for 11 games as a freshman due to a foot injury and 22 total last season due to two separate knee injuries.

UConn will now be left shorthanded when it travels to George Town, Cayman Islands for the Women’s Cayman Islands Classic later this week, where it will play two games in the Caribbean exclusively streamed on FloHoops.

The Huskies will play No. 2 UCLA at 7:30 p.m. (ET) Friday and Kansas at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the event.
